MRI or X-ray, which is better?

X-ray is used to diagnose bone problems. This could be anything from arthritis, to dislocations, to fractures, and even cancer. X-ray is often the first imaging study done in order to find any of the above conditions as well as many others. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (or MRI) is done for conditions affecting almost all parts of the body. It is able to give the clinician information that could not be obtained with X-ray. Conditions like torn ligaments, tendons, hemorrhages, and disc bulges are some of the common diagnoses made from MRIs. So the question is not which is better, X-ray or MRI, but rather which is appropriate for the most likely condition to be discovered. As a side note, X-rays are typically about 1/8th the cost of MRIs depending on the areas of the body that are being imaged.
