Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy goes hand in hand with chiropractic care. It includes services such as electrical stimulation, manual therapies, active release therapy, therapeutic exercises, and decompression. Please read the descriptions below to find out more about each type of physiotherapy we provide. Dr. Kauffman was awarded a National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) Certificate of Attainment for physiotherapy in 2011.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Electrical Muscle Stimulation or E-Stim includes a group of therapies that use electrode pads on the skin with a small electrical current. This current is intended to either fatigue or relax the muscle, or to decrease overall pain in the area involved. It can also help restore muscle tone to its proper level. Some therapies that are included in the E-Stim category are Premod, Interferential, Hi-Volt, Low-Volt, and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation).

Manual Therapies

Manual therapy includes specific stretches that the doctor uses, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, PNF stretching, and many other techniques used to rehabilitate and relax muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and connective tissues. This is done to increase mobility, restore joint motion, restore muscle tone, and decrease pain. Manual therapies can help with conditions such as neck pain, back pain, headaches, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, knee, hip or ankle pain.

Decompression / Traction

The Triton DTS traction system uses a unique belting system and a digital computation of the amount of traction and type of traction utilized. Traction is used to increase disc height, reduce spinal pressure, and increase fluid into the disc to promote healing. The traction system is used for certain patients with back or neck pain. Decompression therapy can be especially helpful with cases of disc herniation or bulging in the spine.

Therapeutic Exercise

These are exercises that you are performing that the doctor helps you with. These can include stretches and strengthening exercises to rehabilitate you after an injury or pain. If there are exercises that Dr. Kauffman feels would benefit you by doing at home he will instruct you on an at-home exercise program.

Ice and Heat

It is important to consult Dr. Kauffman as to whether you should be using ice, heat, a combination of both, or neither for your condition. These are services we provide at the office as well as recommendations you can take home and use yourself.
