Natural ways to manage blood sugar

Natural ways to manage blood sugar.

Here are a few ways to manage your blood sugar (these are general recommendations not designed to specifically treat diabetes or any other condition)

  1. Stop eating sugar! This is simple, yet difficult. Many of the processed foods, especially foods that are promoted as low-fat foods are packed with added sugar. By reducing your intake of these foods you can decrease your glycemic load. What this means to your body is that it won’t get stressed by having to deal with extra sugar.

  2. Eat foods that are lower on the glycemic index. The glycemic index is a measure of how fast the food you eat turns to sugar in your body. You can search for foods within a certain glycemic index http://www.glycemicindex.com. Lower glycemic index foods are things like oatmeal, most beans, vegetables, and fruits. High glycemic index foods (to stay away from) include things like white bread, russet potatoes, pretzels, and popcorn.

  3. Consider a chromium supplement. Chromium is a natural mineral that has been shown in multiple studies to lower fasting glucose levels. The specific supplement that has been studied the most is chromium picolinate. Doses of 200 – 1000 micrograms are the levels of the supplement used in clinical trials. It is important to get the right type of chromium in the right dose to make it effective. Please ask us if you would like to order chromium picolinate through Metagenics.
