Many people come to our office with what they call either lower back pain or hip pain, but in reality the pain is right in between. It’s in the dimples of the back. The pain is usually worse while sitting and gets better with more movement. It can be a source of a lot of stress, especially if you sit at work and are in pain while sitting!
This is called the sacroiliac or SI joint area. It’s an area that can easily become stiff and painful. Luckily there are a couple of easy things to try for this pain. First, don’t sit too long. About 30 minutes of sitting at a time is enough to stiffen these joints, so get up and move before this happens. Also, a good stretch to try is to lie on the floor bend one knee up, and then rotate to the opposite side. This will stretch your back in rotation, which usually feels great for this area.
If you need further help with pain in this area, chiropractic can help a lot! Chiropractic adjustments can be done directly into the sacroiliac (SI) joints, freeing them from the stiffness that can set in.
