Wellness vs. Maintenance vs. Prevention

Wellness, maintenance, and prevention are terms that are commonly thrown around, but what do they mean for your health? Let me explain.

Prevention and wellness care can be considered the same thing. These are terms that are used in health care for services when you have no symptoms and get care anyway. An example here would be getting a massage or an adjustment, when you feel good, to keep you feeling good. Another example would be taking a multivitamin daily to keep you from getting sick. This is the optimum form of health care, true prevention. The best treatment for any disease is to prevent it from happening in the first place.

Screenings like blood pressure tests, mammograms, and prostate exams would be in the category of Early Detection, NOT prevention. Finding out you have high blood pressure before it gets really high is important, but this has not prevented you from having it.

Maintenance is different than wellness and prevention. It is care that is given after you have symptoms. Let’s say you have diabetes, and you take chromium to help keep it in check. This would be an example of maintaining your diabetes, not curing it, not preventing it.

These three terms are often used interchangeably, but now you know better!
